Motivation to Love Yourself

By Olivia Rostigus

We have all been exposed to the familiar saying, 'Love yourself first'. In fact, most of us have heard it, but, probably never taken the time to actually analyze as to what it really means. Psychics hear daily how people want change, but, seldom to people want to take the action necessary to make it happen.

We have all said or heard it said to us that, 'You have to love your 'self' first', but we really have no clue on how to go about acting on it. When a person is upset, overwhelmed or angry, this type of comment is often viewed as an attack. Neither person really knows how to begin the change necessary to correction the problem.

People usually have the intension of trying to get the person to do something about their situation. Loving yourself first is a well meaning phrase, but, without the proper training, most people don't have any idea what it takes to actually love yourself. Saying something like this to someone can cause them to feel unsupported and they must go it alone with no idea how.

The message behind these words can be damaging to the recipient because it feels like rejection, often making the situation worse because now they feel cut off with no one to talk to. They literally get stopped in their tracks and feel as though they have just been slapped in the face.

1. I don't really know any other thing to say that will help

2. If you would just act on what I tell you, everything would work out for you

3. I can see that you need to take an action and quit sulking

4. I don't know how to be supportive, so, just do this

Psychics often hear from people when they feel at the end of their rope and in deep trouble. They feel rejected by their friends; they are desperate for someone to help them feel better by listening and giving them compassionate advice.

The act of loving yourself literally means treating the "self" well in thought and deed. This process of loving our "selves" begins by taking an action. Below is a scenario which most of us can relate to:

Your young child is being ganged up on at recess. Most people run to their crying child and pull them out of the situation. Parents usually have a fierce innate protection toward their children and run to protect them immediately without thinking about it. You have saved their 'self' by removing them from the situation and then calming them down.

As adults, we have all been in negative situations in life, and most of us learn to pull away from them on our own. An emotionally healthy adult will avoid the next similar circumstance. But, for many, they will stay in a bad situation, hoping that it will go away on its own without them having to do anything.

The reason things don't change is because they didn't take any action. These types of situations tend to repeat themselves until all is black and the bottom seems to drop out. Depression sets in and a sense of hopelessness takes over. They tend to try to unload the bad feelings by talking about it over and over to anyone who will listen. This type of behavior pushes people away. Why? Because they see the person drowning when all they would have to do is take a step in the right direction in order to change it, instead of taking appropriate action like the ones listed below:

1. Avoiding people that are negative toward you

2. Take a class and learn something that you have always dreamed of

As psychics, we can often see that someone is in the wheel chair of life, facing a staircase, and feel the frustration and know that just around the corner, down the hall, is an elevator complete with a button to push. A skilled psychic can help you to see other options. There are usually opportunities just around the corner, but, it may take an action on your part in order for change to begin.

You need to begin the process of loving your 'self' first, so that other people will want to.
