Don't Let Those Frown Lines Get You Down

By Dern Heatherton

Botox Cosmetic has for years retained the title as the most commonly performed "non-surgical" cosmetic procedure in the United States, based on its ease of use and consistently good cosmetic results.

The most common cosmetic use for Botox is the treatment of the frown lines between the eyebrows. When you inject the frown muscle with an adequate dose of Botox Cosmetic, it stops moving. As a result, the frown line diminishes. The frown lines are reduced because the muscle that cause the wrinkles to occur is not activating in the same pattern.

The frown lines between the eyes are the most common area treated with Botox. Botox was actually approved for frown lines in 2002 by the FDA. In addition to the fact that frown lines are a major area of concern for patients is the fact that the market was driven by extremely high levels of satisfaction among patient end users. Botox relaxes the frown. Some say it takes away that "angry" look and makes them more approachable. The end result is a more refreshed and relaxed appearance.

A healthy approach to any surgery requires that you be in relatively good physical health. Also, it's important to inform your doctor of any medications your currently taking to ensure there are no potential conflicts that could arise. Your medical history should include oral contraceptives and estrogen replacement, vitamins, and herbal medications. Remember, these can impact blood clotting and could increase surgical risk.

Before surgery, even minor treatments such as BOTOX, patients should be educated about all aspects of the planned treatment, including whether to discontinue certain medications and stop smoking.

To achieve the most desired results, you should take the following precautionary measures when preparing for your Botox treatment:

- Wait 24 hours before engaging in strenuous activity or exercise

- Do your best to stay upright for 4-5 hours after the injections

- Do not massage the treated area or areas

- Practice daily facial exercises as directed by your doctor

- And be sure wear sun block

You want to let the Botox settle, so it is recommended that in the recovery period, you limit your muscle movements as best as you can.

On average, the effects of Botox injections last anywhere from 3-6 months. Though not as prominently as prior to the procedure, facial lines and wrinkles will start to reappear. It is normally when this occurs that a patient will return to have their procedure performed again. Medically speaking, Botox injections can be repeated indefinitely with results lasting progressively longer with each treatment, requiring fewer procedures to achieve their desired look.
