Taking an Offseason Seriously

By Rey Vetangelo

Whatever your sport or physical activity, your offseason is one of the most important parts of your training program. Some athletes make the mistake of thinking they don't need one, and that ends up being more dangerous than they realize.

If you are feeling anxious about a surgery that you know you are going to have to undergo, there are ways that you may be able to manage your anxiety. Start by talking openly with your doctor about any anxiety that you are having concerning your surgery.

As you are talking to your surgeon, be as open and honest as you can to ensure that your surgeon can address your concerns properly. You may find that your surgeon, or even your doctor, is able to provide you with some insight that helps you quell the anxiety you are feeling.

Sometimes the fear of the unknown can be a large factor in the anxiety that occurs before a surgery. Asking your doctor to walk you through the procedure is a great way to help you understand what exactly is going to happen to your body throughout the surgery.

Before making any decision to change your diet or your habits, consult with your doctor. You want to make sure that you are doing something that is going to facilitate positive results rather than hinder your ability to heal quickly and recover properly.

That means no late night jogs, visits to the gym, or anything; just let your body settle down and heal. Sleep as much as you can during this time. Eat healthy food that builds your muscles and immune system. Supply your body with much needed nutrients and let it get to work, uninterrupted.

You want to give it that much time off so it can devote its resources to finally fixing those aches and pains you've been developing over the past year. You benefit from it by taking a step away from needing electrosurgical attention. The lack of exercise might drive you crazy. Distract yourself with other goals.

As you start to talk about healing, you should understand what your body is going to be doing to heal and how you can expect yourself to feel. There may also be ways that you can prepare your body to ensure that you are in a prime position to be able to heal properly.

There may be a diet that you can follow before you go into surgery or even an exercise regimen that can prepare your body for the surgery. Consult with your doctor and your surgeon to ensure that you are doing everything you can do to prepare for your surgery.

Many people are surprised how much a little knowledge can do to ensure that they are not fearful about a surgery. If you are still feeling anxious about your surgery, be open with your doctor and your surgeons concerning your anxiety.

Understand the importance of getting yourself ready for your surgery and you may find that your recovery process is easier than you thought it would be. You may also find that you are able to have more peace of mind concerning your procedure if you are ready for the healing process.
